Many people have never taken the time to really think about their communication style and success. They tend to know when something “isn’t working” but rarely move beyond that in their understanding and even less often do they know how to make changes to their communication patterns. This presentation focuses on understanding the basics of human communication to begin shaping more successful communication strategies. Topics include: · A model of understanding human communication (the source of many misunderstandings) · The role of communication competence in our communication choices · The value in taking a process perspective · Understanding the role of self-monitoring and how to respect others’ self-monitoring behaviors as we take an other-centered approach to communication · How to perception-check during a conversation to ensure understanding · Basic listening skills for relationship success
