Thanksgiving Dinner: Cranberry Relish Recipe

Updated: 3 days ago

Our Thanksgiving tradition is priceless to me. Traditions serve to connect us to generations before us. We build a common activity that lays the groundwork for some amazing memories. Those actions of living out the traditions are another step to building successful families.

Thanksgiving recipe: cranberry relish - family recipes and traditions build successful families by connecting us to the past and looking to the future

I love the food at Thanksgiving. We generally eat traditional food. For us that includes turkey, stuffing, gravy, mashed potatoes, butternut squash (cooked with butter and brown sugar!), green bean casserole, fresh yeast rolls, cranberry relish, pumpkin pie, and apple pie.

I also make some Christmas cookies so when we decorate after dinner on Thanksgiving we have cookies and eggnog while we have a movie playing in the background. This is one of my favorite Thanksgiving traditions.

Scott Family Cranberry Relish:

(Note: takes 2 days)

  • 1 bag whole fresh cranberries

  • 2 c. white sugar

  • 2 small jello boxes (not low sugar - it won't set for this)

  • 4 c. warm water

  • 1 c. celery, chopped small

  • 1 c. walnuts, chopped small

  • 1 peeled, ground orange

  1. In a food processor, add the cranberries. Pulse 2 times. Add peeled orange. Pulse until the cranberries are fine and the orange is chopped up.

  2. Place the chopped fruit and sugar in a large bowl*. Let it sit overnight.

  3. In the morning, dissolve the jello in the water.

  4. Chill in a dish. Stir every 30 minutes.

  5. When it is almost set, add to the cold cranberry mixture.

  6. Add celery and nuts.

  7. Stir and let sit in fridge until ready to use. Once all ingredients are cold, cover with plastic wrap or beeswax cloth wrap.

* This dish looks stunning in a crystal bowl, if you have one.
