New Year, No Pressure

Here are some great ideas for the new year, no resolutions required
We've all heard the statistics, right?
  • After 1 week, 75% of people are still successful with their resolutions

  • After 2 weeks, 71% are successful

  • After 1 month, 64% are still successful (that still seems good to me!)

  • After 6 months, the number of people feeling successful about their resolutions drops to almost half (at 46%)

Ouch. If you're like me, you've wondered, "Am I a failure if I don't keep my resolutions?" "What if I don't New Years' resolutions?" "I'm already swamped and it's only the first week of January!" "How do I get started with a resolution when I've failed in the past?"

You're totally not alone, I promise.

Let's set the record straight. I find many of us know the truth, but forget to remind ourselves.

🎈 We're really strong when we feel weak (like a failure). Check out 2 Corinthians 12:9.

🎈 While we may or may not make resolutions, God is ultimately the one who directs our path. See Proverbs 16:9.

🎈 When we are overwhelmed, God will give us rest and keep us steady. Isaiah 41:10 is one of my go-to verses when I'm feeling stretched to my limit.

🎈 You may not know how to make resolutions but God's plans for you are good and will take care of you. Jeremiah 29:11 is a classic reminder of this fact.

Now that we are reminded of how our concerns line up with God's truth, let's look at some simple next steps:
  • Breathe. It's all going to be okay. Go take a walk and clear your head.

  • Perspective. The world isn't revolving around anyone's resolutions, so let that pressure go.

  • Beauty. Look around and find something beautiful in your world. Maybe it's the amaryllis blooming or your child's sweet sleeping face. Find beauty and take a moment to just BE in that moment.

  • Prioritize. What's most important in your life? Family? Health? Home? Faith? Great. Focus on that. Don't concern yourself with "resolutions" for now. Just keep your eyes on what's most important to you.

  • Act. It doesn't have to be toward some idealistic resolution. Seriously. Want to cut down on sugar? There are lots of resources. Want to exercise more? Here's a great workout you can do from home, regardless of fitness level. Just pick something - one thing - and do it.

I hope you feel less pressure now. Just let it go. No one is evaluating you on how well you do or do not keep up with resolutions.
